Name the waste before you fight it.

The eight wastes, remembered as DOWNTIME, are the standard places value leaks out of a process. This audit walks all eight, captures where you see each one, and scores them so the biggest loss is obvious and you fix that first.

What it is

A walk through the eight wastes, remembered as DOWNTIME. Each one is a way time, material, or effort leaks out of a process without adding value.

When to use it

When you know a process is slow or costly but not exactly where. The audit turns a vague feeling into a scored, ranked list.

How to run it

Watch the process, note where you see each waste, and rate how bad it is. Then attack the highest scores first.

Worked example: order to finished sign

The audit flags Waiting as high (jobs sit two days for proof approval), Inventory as medium (a wall of WIP at the cutter), and Motion as medium (operators hunting for blades and files). Defects and overproduction score low. With the scores in front of you, the proof-approval delay is the obvious first target, not the tidy-up everyone keeps suggesting.
