Coach the person, do not fix the problem.

GROW keeps a coaching conversation on track: clarify the Goal, face the Reality, open up Options, then nail down the Will to act. It moves a one-on-one from advice and venting to a person owning their own next steps, captured here with the actions they commit to.

What it is

A simple coaching model: Goal, Reality, Options, Will. It keeps a development conversation moving from where someone wants to be to what they will actually do.

When to use it

In one-on-ones, reviews, or when helping someone work through a problem. The structure stops it from drifting into venting or advice-giving.

How to run it

Ask, do not tell. Capture the goal and the honest reality, draw out their options, then lock in what they will commit to and by when.

Worked example: a new finisher

Goal: run the laminator solo within a month. Reality: confident on small jobs, nervous on wide rolls after a bubble last week. Options: shadow the lead on three wide jobs, build a setup checklist, practice on offcuts. Will: commits at an 8 out of 10, picks shadowing plus the checklist. Two actions are logged with dates, and the next one-on-one checks them.
